The Miami Heat came up short against the New York Knicks on Sunday, suffering a 132-125 loss. The Heat couldn’t slow Jalen Brunson down and poured in 47 points. In the first half, Miami was able to keep the game close, 66-64. However, they lacked the extra effort in the second half.

Center Kel’el Ware did a lot for the Heat with his 29 points and 19 rebounds. Norman Powell also helped with his 22 points on 50% shooting from deep. Jaime Jaquez Jr. added 23 points off the bench. But their scoring output wasn’t enough to keep the Knicks on their toes.

Following the contest, coach Erik Spoelstra addressed the effort that the Heat presented against the Knicks. His strong message was more about what he wants to see from the group moving forward.

“We are developing a collective, competitive will,” Spoelstra said. “And these painful games, eventually, are going to be wins. We’re not happy about the result.

“Our guys care in the locker room but there’s got to be another level. It’s not enough, it’s got to be more. It’s a savage league, it’s survival of the competitive toughest.”

The Heat have fallen to a 15-14 record this season. One of the team’s weaknesses this season is how they’ve failed to protect the lead. Against the Knicks, the team had a seven-point lead after the opening quarter. However, they were outscored in the second quarter, 36-25.

In most areas of the floor, the Heat have performed well. Regretfully, Miami has struggled to maintain its lead.
