Alexander Isak injury: A significant update has emerged regarding the Liverpool striker’s fitness.

Liverpool striker Alexander Isak is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after being withdrawn after scoring in Saturday’s 2-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur.

Isak came off the bench to score his second Premier League goal of the season following his £130million move to Liverpool from Newcastle United.

But upon scoring, the 26-year-old was on the receiving end of a challenge from Spurs defender Micky van de Ven and was forced off after receiving treatment. Isak needed assistance as he was taken off the pitch, sparking fears of a significant injury.

After the match, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot suggested Isak’s injury doesn’t look good but refrained from jumping to any medical conclusions.

“I don't have any news on him, but if a player scores, then gets injured and then doesn't come back on the pitch and doesn't try to come back,” Slot said. “Which Conor Bradley, for example, did, but I had to take him off as well because he couldn't go on, but if a player doesn't even try to come back that's usually not a good thing.

“But I cannot say anything more than that, that is just [a] gut feeling. Nothing medical to say about it.”

Alexander Isak injury update

On Sunday evening, The Athletic reported that Isak has suffered a suspected broken leg and is set for an extended period on the sidelines with the ‘significant’ injury.

The injury will rule Isak out of featuring against his former club Newcastle at Anfield on January 31 with a potential return date of around the March international break.

Isak scored 27 goals for The Magpies last season but has had a frustrating start to life at Liverpool following his Premier League record transfer. The Swede has struggled for form and fitness for Liverpool so far after forcing a move away from Newcastle in the summer.

Newcastle United watch on

Newcastle also experienced a significant injury blow to a deadline day striker signing of their own with Yoane Wissa ruled out for three months with a knee injury days after joining the club from Brentford for £55million.

Wissa is now back available for Newcastle and opened his account on his full debut for the club in a 2-1 win over Fulham in the Carabao Cup last week.

Isak also suffered a serious injury shortly after joining Newcastle from Real Sociedad for £63million back in 2022. After scoring twice in his first three appearances for Newcastle, including one on his debut against Liverpool at Anfield, Isak suffered a thigh injury that kept him out for four months in total.

Now history is repeating itself somewhat at Liverpool, with Isak suffering yet another injury blow.
