Newcastle United are set to face Liverpool at Anfield on January 31.

Alexander Isak will almost certainly not be granted his Newcastle United reunion after suffering a suspected broken leg against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Magpies are set to travel to Liverpool on January 31 - a ground they have not won at since 1994. Isak was still a Newcastle player when the two clubs met in August’s reverse fixture - with his British record transfer just days away.

Toon officials met with the Swede at his Northumberland home ahead of the game in one final crunch meeting over his future. It became clear that Isak would never play for Newcastle again - and his move was sanctioned less than a week later.

While a hostile reception at St James’ Park was unlikely this season, Isak - albeit in unfortunate circumstances for the striker - will avoid pelters from the Anfield away end next month.

The Athletic report that Liverpool fear Isak has endured a suspected leg break. A collision with Micky van de Ven as he broke the deadlock forced him off the field.

Several members of the Liverpool backroom staff helped the 26-year-old trudge off the pitch and fans immediately feared the worst. News emerged early yesterday morning that the Reds expected Isak to spend a lengthy spell on the sidelines - David Ornstein now claims he has suffered a likely broken leg.

Arne Slot post-match comments

When facing the media post-match, Liverpool boss Arne Slot admitted the fact Isak did not want to continue after scoring a goal was “not a good thing”. He did not give a definitive answer on his expected injury timeline.

“I don’t have any news on him,” Slot said. “But if a player scores and then gets injured and doesn’t try to come back on the pitch, that’s usually not a good thing.

“I cannot say any more than that, it’s just a gut feeling, nothing medical to say about it. I haven’t spoken to him about that yet. But it’s a good thing that he scored… a good goal! Let’s not be too negative yet, we don’t know yet (the severity), let’s hope he’s back with us soon, but it is difficult to say it to you now.”

‘More complicated than it seems’ - Alexander Isak

In midweek, Isak hinted to Swedish media that the full story on his explosive summer exit has not been disclosed. He said: “Isak also hinted at there being stories yet to be told regarding his explosive summer exit. For now, he is preferring to keep his Newcastle career “in the past” and succeed on Merseyside.

“I can say this, things are always more complicated than they seem,” Isak added. “I have talked about this, but I have not gone into depth. And it is not something that I want to do, based on the fact that I have put it behind me. I am focusing forward, there is no benefit in going into it or opening it up - neither for me nor for anyone else. It must remain in the past.”
