On Sunday, Payne seemingly confirmed the transfer himself by posting black-and-white heart emojis on his Instagram stories — a gesture widely interpreted as a nod to Partizan's iconic colors.
Although the agreement is reportedly finalized, Payne's official arrival is expected to wait until Tuesday, when Partizan are set to introduce their new head coach, Joan Penarroya.
Selected 14th overall in the 2015 NBA Draft out of Murray State, Payne has built a decade-long NBA career, suiting up for seven different franchises.
Most recently, he played for the New York Knicks, averaging 6.9 points and 2.8 assists in 72 games during the 2024–25 season, including five starts.
Across 477 NBA games (71 starts), Payne has career averages of 7.8 points and 3.2 assists, while shooting 41.9% from the field and 36.8% from three-point range.
His résumé includes stints with the Thunder, Bulls, Cavaliers, Suns, Bucks, 76ers, and Knicks.
After a short preseason spell with the Indiana Pacers, Payne was waived and has been a free agent ever since. Now 31, he appears set for a new chapter in Europe, where he would make his EuroLeague debut with Partizan.
