But he made it clear Lewis Dunk and Jan Paul van Hecke will be back at Arsenal on Saturday.
Diego Coppola and Olivier Boscagli played their first full games in the Premier League as Albion drew 0-0 with the Black Cats.
Dunk served a one-match suspension while Jan Paul van Hecke was a surprise absentee due to illness.
Boscagli had previously deputised when Dunk had been unwell but it was a first league start for Coppola, who has made it clear he is keen for game time.
Hurzeler told The Argus ahead of the game that Coppola is not happy but has shown a good attitude at training and around the club.
Speaking after the game, the Albion boss said: “I think he played a good game, but we all understand the situation. We have really good centre-backs,
“Four really good centre-backs, not only with Coppola, but also with Oli, with Jan Paul van Hecke and with Lewis Dunk.
“And Lewis and JP are quite experienced players in the Premier League so, unfortunately, only two can play, and that's the worst thing.
“So we are in exchange. They understand the situation but of course if a player doesn't play that many times he's not happy.
“But that's the thing we have to deal with.”
Hurzeler played a back three including both Coppola and Boscagli when Albion visited Arsenal in the Carabao Cup.
Both are experienced campaigners and he was pleased with their efforts against Sunderland.
Hurzeler said: “They played well, they kept the clean sheet. It's not easy if you have to change the back four.”
