David Ornstein reveals Antoine Semenyo to Liverpool blow

As the January transfer window edges closer, Liverpool find themselves navigating an increasingly complex situation regarding Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo.

The 25-year-old has emerged as one of the Premier League’s most in-form attackers this season, netting eight goals and providing three assists in just 16 league appearances. The Ghanaian winger has attracted widespread attention, with his £65 million release clause—active only during the first two weeks of January—creating a time-sensitive opportunity for interested clubs.

However, the Reds are far from alone in their pursuit. Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur are all monitoring the situation closely. Alexander Isak’s suspected lower leg fracture sustained during Liverpool’s 2-1 victory at Tottenham on Saturday only has increased the likelihood of the Reds making a serious attempt for Semenyo in January.

However, David Ornstein has now reported that although Liverpool are keen, the Anfield club has not “moved to the same extent” as the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United in the transfer race:

“This is going to be one of the biggest stories of the January transfer window and I would suspect it will be resolved sooner rather than later,” said the transfer journalist to NBC Sports. “If he is going to move it would need to be in the early part of the window.”

“Everything I’ve learned suggests that a transfer is highly possible and the names that are emerging as the leading contenders right now are Manchester City and Manchester United – in no particular order, they’re both extremely fond of him.”

“Liverpool are said to have had great admiration for him, but they haven’t moved to the same extent so far to my knowledge, but let’s see if anything changes around the Alexander Isak injury. Tottenham Hotspur were very keen and I’m led to believe were prepared to pay a significant salary to Antoine Semenyo, but he politely is focusing on other options, namely it seems City or United.”

It remains unclear whether Liverpool will accelerate their pursuit in January.
