Liverpool 'expected to confirm' scan results amid Alexander Isak injury fears, absence…

Tottenham 1-2 Liverpool: Match Review

Liverpool fear Alexander Isak has suffered a broken leg following the Tottenham game

Liverpool fear that Alexander Isak has suffered ‘significant damage’ to his lower leg, following a new injury update.

Sky Sports has reported that the club are ‘expected to confirm’ the striker has a broken leg once scan results return.

Liverpool are waiting on an MRI scan on the injury Isak suffered against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday. The Swede scored Liverpool’s opening goal after coming off the bench in the second half, but was unable to continue after Micky van de Ven clattered into him trying to deny the opportunity.

Isak wasn’t even able to celebrate his goal as he immediately signalled for medical attention. Following treatment on the pitch, the 26-year-old was forced off and replaced by Jeremie Frimpong, who has returned from his own injury setback.

Alexander Isak injury update

Several reports are now suggesting Isak has suffered a serious injury, which is expected to see him side-lined for a lengthy period. David Ornstein initially reported a ‘significant leg injury’ looked likely shortly after Liverpool’s win over Spurs.

The Athletic reporter has followed up with his own report of a ‘suspected leg break’ following Van de Ven’s challenge. While the club are yet to confirm the full nature of Isak’s injury, the striker is estimated to be out for ‘a few months’ as scans are expected to confirm a ‘fracture to the left side’.

This setback will be significant for Isak, in what has been a tough start to life at Anfield. After signing for Liverpool for a British record £125 million, the former Newcastle United star needed time to be fully integrated into his new team due to lack of pre-season training.

He suffered a groin injury in October, which kept fans waiting for his first Premier League goal until the last day of November against West Ham.

Isak has just three goals in 16 appearances across all competitions so far in his maiden season for Liverpool. He has been dropped to the bench in the last three Premier League outings in favour of Hugo Ekitike, who also scored against Tottenham. Ekitike now has eight league goals on his tally and has scored five in his last three appearances.

What has Arne Slot said about Alexander Isak’s injury?

Following the win over Spurs, Arne Slot addressed the injury concerns surrounding Isak but couldn’t give much information at the time.

“I don't have any news on him, but if a player scores, then gets injured and then doesn't come back on the pitch and doesn't try to come back... which Conor Bradley, for example, did, but I had to take him off as well because he couldn't go on.

“But if a player doesn't even try to come back that's usually not a good thing. But I cannot say anything more than that, that is just [a] gut feeling. Nothing medical to say about it.”

Liverpool’s latest win puts them fifth in the Premier League table for Christmas. Their final match of the year will be against Wolves, who are still yet to register their first win of the season. The Reds will then face Leeds United on New Year’s Day.
