Journalist Says“Official Proposal”From Liverpool Will Be Made“Early This Week”As Hughes Starts January Business

Liverpool are ramping up their efforts to sign Gremio attacking midfielder Gabriel Mec, according to reports in Brazil.

Journalist Fabio Vargas has posted on X that an “official proposal” is expected from the Reds “early this week”.

A bid of around €15m (£13.1m) is set to be tabled, and Gremio will not reject the proposal out of hand.

It is believed that the Brazilian Serie A team will negotiate the price with the Premier League champions and try to get a slightly higher fee if they can, but it appears that Mec could be on his way to Anfield.

What do fans need to know about Gabriel Mec?

The teenager came through Gremio’s academy but he has only made two appearances at senior level so far, making his debut against Monsoon FC in the Gaucho State Championship back in January.

Mec has also caught the eye when playing for Brazil. He featured at the Under 17 World Cup last month, playing in every match before his country were knocked out at the semi-final stage by Portugal.

If an agreement is reached with Gremio, he won’t officially move to England until the summer, as he only turns 18 in April.

Will Liverpool be busy during the January transfer window?

Sporting director Richard Hughes is likely to step up his plans to sign a forward following the news that Alexander Isak is set to be sidelined for a lengthy period with a leg injury.

Many anticipate an offer for Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo. The Ghanaian international has a release clause in his contract worth £65m, but it is reportedly only active for the first 10 days in January.

A new centre-back could also be on the agenda. Joe Gomez’s fitness problems, combined with Giovanni Leoni’s ACL injury, mean there is no backup for captain Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.
