Liverpool’s recruitment department rarely sleeps. While the January transfer window is often characterised by panic buys or desperate attempts to plug immediate gaps in the first team, the work on long-term succession planning continues quietly in the background. The Reds have built a formidable reputation for smart, opportunistic recruitment, constantly scouring the globe for emerging talent that can save them millions in the long run.
There has been a noticeable shift in recent years where top Premier League clubs are increasingly trying to bypass the “middleman” clubs—like Benfica or Porto—to go straight to the source in South America.
And it looks Liverpool are looking to pull the trigger on one such target. According to Brazilian journalist Fábio Vargas, Liverpool are set to table an opening bid in the region of €15m (£12.5m) for the 17-year-old attacker.
The official proposal is expected to land on Grêmio’s desk early next week, marking a significant escalation in interest after Liverpool scouts spent months monitoring the youngster’s progress.
The update provides plenty of encouragement for a potential deal. Vargas reports that Grêmio have no intention of rejecting the offer outright. The club reportedly views the €15m figure as a “positive” starting point. However, as is standard in these negotiations, the Brazilian side will likely look to negotiate the final fee slightly higher or restructure the payments to maximise their return before signing off.
He recently grabbed the attention of scouts worldwide during the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar just last month. Wearing the iconic number 10 shirt for Brazil, Mec played every game as his nation fell to their Portuguese counterparts in the semi-finals on penalties.
Mec is no stranger to concrete European interest. Earlier this season, he was reportedly on the verge of joining Shakhtar Donetsk after a bid was accepted, but the deal eventually collapsed when the player decided the timing wasn’t right to leave Brazil. This time, with Premier League giants knocking, the allure may be too difficult to turn down.
