Tottenham 1-2 Liverpool: Match Review
Mo Salah remains linked with a move away from Liverpool following his recent comments about his future
The future of Mohamed Salah remains uncertain as the January transfer window approaches and Liverpool consider their options at the midway point in the season.
The Reds are currently without Salah until potentially late January, while he represents Egypt in the Africa Cup of Nations. He left for Morocco following Liverpool’s win over Brighton and will be absent until at least the end of the year.
Should Egypt reach the AFCON final, Salah could miss a further seven Liverpool games. The final is scheduled for January 18th, by which time the winter window will have been open for more than two weeks.
Saudi Arabia clubs are heavily linked with the winger once again and Saudi Pro League chief executive Omar Mugharbel recently confirmed Salah is on the division’s radar.
“Mohamed Salah is welcome in the Saudi League, but it is the clubs that are responsible for negotiating with players. For sure Salah is one of them [a target],” Mugharbel said while speaking at the recent World Football Summit in Riyadh.
Saudi Arabia backed to pay Liverpool ‘what they want’ for Mo Salah
Former Manchester City financial advisor Stefan Borson believes Saudi Arabia clubs will be in a position to ‘pay Liverpool what they want’ for Salah.
Back in 2023, the Reds rejected a £150 million bid from Al-Ittihad, which would have seen the Egyptian earn a reported £1.5 million per week in wages. His contract at Anfield expires in 2027 and at 33 years old, he will not command a fee as high, but Liverpool could still get a handsome amount of money for him.
“I think it depends on Saudi doesn’t it, and whether he wants to go. I mean, if the answer is yes, then you would think they’ll do a deal,” Borson told Football Insider.
“I think Saudi will be able to pay what Liverpool want. I don’t think Liverpool will be unreasonable about it. I think what we consider to be reasonable, if Liverpool could clear £50-75 million of a transfer fee for him, it would be an amazing achievement for them. I suspect they’d be happy with that. It would draw the thing to a close.”
What did Mo Salah say about his position at Liverpool?
Before he departure for AFCON, Salah rocked the Liverpool camp with his bombshell comments about his position at the club. After being an unused substitute against West Ham and Leeds United, the winger told the media it felt like the club had thrown him under the bus. He also hinted that the Brighton game could be his last as he spoke about saying goodbye to the fans at Anfield.
“I'm very disappointed. I have done so much for this club. Everybody can see that through the years, especially last season,” Salah told the media after the Leeds game.
“Sitting on the bench... I don't know why. It seems like the club has thrown me under the bus. That's how I feel it. I think it's very clear that someone wants me to get all the blame.
“Before, I had a good relationship with the manager and, all of a sudden, we don't have any relationship. I don't know why. It seems to me that someone doesn't want me in the club.
“I don't have to go every day fighting for my position because I earn it. People will say, 'Oh, you're not bigger…' I'm not bigger than anyone [but] I earned my position. This is football.”
Salah was left out of the travelling squad that faced Inter Milan in the Champions League but returned against Brighton, following Arne Slot’s confirmation he would be sitting down to speak with his player.
