Liverpool’s weekend was already overshadowed by injury concerns, and events elsewhere have only added to the growing sense of anxiety. The Reds are increasingly worried that their record signing, Alexander Isak, could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines after sustaining a suspected broken leg during Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur. The 26-year-old was injured as he scored the opening goal of the match, landing awkwardly following a late sliding challenge from Spurs defender Micky van de Ven.
The tackle left the Sweden international clutching his leg in agony and unable to join in the celebrations with his team-mates. He received treatment from medical staff before limping off the pitch and was replaced by Jeremie Frimpong, who was later forced off himself after being struck in the face by Richarlison. Reports suggest that an MRI scan will confirm Liverpool’s worst fears, with the club concerned that their £125million summer signing has suffered a broken leg.
Elsewhere, former Liverpool forward Takumi Minamino also suffered a serious injury on Sunday while playing for Monaco. The Japan international was stretchered off during Monaco’s 2-1 French Cup win over Auxerre after injuring his left knee. Monaco head coach Sebastien Pocognoli admitted after the match that he was pessimistic about the severity of the injury, with Minamino leaving the pitch with his face in his hands. “Taki is in the hospital and I don’t yet know what he has. I don’t know if it might be a torn ACL,” Pocognoli said. “We hope it’s not too serious, but the initial tests weren’t very positive.”
Monaco confirmed on Monday that Minamino has suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), casting serious doubt over his availability for the 2026 World Cup. The 30-year-old, who has scored 26 goals in 73 appearances for Japan, is one of the key players in Hajime Moriyasu’s squad.
Japan have been drawn in World Cup Group F alongside the Netherlands, Tunisia, and a European play-off winner yet to be decided between Poland, Sweden, Ukraine, and Albania. The tournament will take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, 2026.
