Liverpool forward nears return from injury

Alexander Isak could be sidelined for months and is a major concern for Liverpool, leaving them short of centre-forward options. The 26-year-old, who joined from Newcastle for a Premier League record £125m in September, was forced off after a challenge from Micky van de Ven in the 2-1 win over Tottenham on Saturday. He underwent MRI scans on Sunday to assess the extent of the injury.

Asked about the injury to Isak sustained after the game, Arne Slot said: “I don’t have any news on him, but if a player scores, then gets injured and then doesn’t come back on the pitch and doesn’t try to come back… which Conor Bradley, for example, did, but I had to take him off as well because he couldn’t go on, but if a player doesn’t even try to come back that’s usually not a good thing. But I cannot say anything more than that, that is just [a] gut feeling. Nothing medical to say about it. We don’t know yet. Let’s hope he is back with us soon but difficult to say to you now.”

Hugo Ekitike is currently Arne Slot’s only established option up front, with Federico Chiesa available as backup but yet to start in the Premier League or Champions League this season. The Reds could get a boost from Jayden Danns, who has been out since late September with a serious hamstring injury. According to This is Anfield, the 19-year-old is back training on grass and could return fully within the next two weeks, potentially making him available in early January. The Reds take on League One side Barnsley in the FA Cup third round on January 12, and Danns might be considered for that squad.

He could also regain match fitness through Rob Page’s U21s, having made three appearances for the academy side this season. Danns has racked up 10 first-team appearances for Liverpool, netting three times, including a brace against Southampton in the FA Cup 2023/24 and one against Accrington Stanley in the same competition last season.
