Former NBA star honored with court dedication

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) -- Central High School hosting a court dedication ceremony in honor of their former basketball player, Travis Best.

The ceremony starting around 6:45 p.m. Monday night, followed by a 7:30 p.m. tip off as the Central Boys’ Varsity Basketball team takes on the Agawam Brownies.

Best led his team to an undefeated 25-0 season, along with a Division I State Championship in 1991.

Yet his career didn’t stop there, as the point guard weren’t on to play at Georgia Tech while surpassing 2,000 career points and 600 assists and multiple all ACC honors.

An inspiration for many students at Central High School, Springfield Athletic Director Dwayne Early says, “For years, Central High has prided itself on a rich tradition of athletics and heart. By naming its basketball court after Travis Best, the district recognizes not only his extraordinary achievements on the court, but also the inspiration he continues to offer to our student-athletes citywide.”

In 1995, he was drafted to the Indiana Pacers where he spent 10 years playing for several NBA teams.

He then continued playing professionally overseas in Russia, Italy, And Poland.
