Despite spending over £180million on strikers during the summer transfer window, Liverpool could be eyeing further reinforcements in January following a serious injury to Alexander Isak. The Sweden forward was signed from Newcastle for a Premier League record £125 million, after the club had already invested £69million in Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike.

Both forwards had scored in Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over Tottenham on Saturday, but Isak was forced to hobble off after a challenge from Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven. The Reds fear that Isak may have suffered a broken leg and are awaiting MRI results to determine the full extent of the injury. With Isak sidelined, Ekitike is expected to lead the line for Liverpool, but the club may once again turn to the transfer market to bolster their attacking options.

Liverpool have managed to steady their season after a difficult period, winning their last three games across all competitions. However, head coach Arne Slot admitted that the team has been lacking in wide options, particularly with the absences of Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah. The situation has been further complicated by injuries and Salah’s participation in the Africa Cup of Nations, making Liverpool’s attacking depth a growing concern.

The club have been linked with several forward options ahead of next summer, but a January move could now become more likely given the current circumstances. One target reportedly on Liverpool’s radar is FC Midtjylland striker Franculino Dju. The 21-year-old has been in sensational form this season, scoring 21 goals and providing three assists in just 30 appearances. Dju joined Midtjylland in 2023 on a free transfer from the Benfica academy and has already made an impact in European competition, netting three goals in five Europa League appearances this season.

Guinea-Bissau failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations, increasing the appeal of Dju for clubs looking for an immediately available option. According to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Bayern Munich made an official bid for Dju last summer and remain interested in the highly-rated forward, meaning Liverpool could face stiff competition if they pursue a move in January.

Plettenberg posted on X: “Christoph Freund is the one at FC Bayern who wanted to sign FC Midtjylland striker #Franculino Djú with an official offer shortly before the last Deadline Day and also has him on the list for the summer. Now it will be decisive how Max Eberl decides on the 21 y/o. FC Bayern are searching for a back-up for Harry Kane, with Fisnik Asllani remaining high on the list.”
