The news every Liverpool fan has been dreading has finally been addressed. A hard-fought away win against Tottenham Hotspur was curtailed by Alexander Isak suffering a suspected lower-leg break after putting the Reds a goal to the good.
As the Swedish international latched onto a through ball to slot past the goalkeeper, he was met with a desperate challenge from Spurs defender Micky van de Ven. The Dutchman, attempting to prevent the goal, slid in with force, colliding heavily with Isak’s lower leg just as the ball crossed the line.
What should have been a moment of celebration instantly turned to concern. Isak was unable to acknowledge the goal, immediately signaling to the bench for medical attention while clutching his leg in clear agony.
Post-match, the mood was somber despite the win. Early reports from Sky Sports News suggested that initial assessments pointed towards a fracture, with fears that the 26-year-old had suffered significant damage to his lower leg. Scans were scheduled immediately to determine the full extent of the injury, leaving the Anfield faithful waiting anxiously for concrete news.
After the game, Arne Slot said: “I don’t have any news on him, but if a player scores, then gets injured and then doesn’t come back on the pitch and doesn’t try to come back… which Conor Bradley, for example, did, but I had to take him off as well because he couldn’t go on, but if a player doesn’t even try to come back that’s usually not a good thing. But I cannot say anything more than that, that is just [a] gut feeling. Nothing medical to say about it. We don’t know yet. Let’s hope he is back with us soon but difficult to say to you now.”
Now Liverpool FC have released a statement confirming the blow: “Alexander Isak today successfully underwent surgery on the injury he sustained on Saturday. The Liverpool striker was injured in a challenge in the process of scoring the opening goal against Tottenham Hotspur and had to be substituted. After diagnosis, an operation was completed today on an ankle injury that included a fibula fracture. Isak’s rehabilitation will now continue at the AXA Training Centre, with no timeframe yet placed on his return.”
