Pistons’ critical bench player to miss first game, length of absence uncertain

Only two members of the Detroit Pistons roster played in every one of the first 28 games of the season for the team.

One of them is going to miss their first game of the year on Monday night as the Pistons face the Portland Trail Blazers in the first of a five-game road trip on the West coast.

Second-year forward Ron Holland will miss his first game of the season due to left knee soreness, coach J.B. Bickerstaff announced ahead of the game.

While Bickerstaff said the injury was picked up in the [Pistons’ win over the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday](https://www.mlive.com/pistons/2025/12/cunningham-post-fourth-triple-double-as-pistons-defense-stifles-hornets.html) — where Holland played 23 minutes and scored nine points with nine rebounds — the severity is still unknown.

“He took a fall last game and the adrenaline was able to carry him through,” Bickerstaff told reporters. “We’re going to get an image tomorrow in Sacramento and have more information.”

The former fifth overall pick has asserted himself in Year 2 as a [critical part of the Pistons’ bench](https://www.mlive.com/pistons/2025/12/why-this-young-pistons-player-loves-coming-off-the-bench.html).

Holland frequently serves as a spark for the Pistons — particularly on defense — and is carving out a unique role on a deep team. Through 28 games, he’s made five starts and averaging 8.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals in 21 minutes per game.

While his scoring efficiency has gone way down, his physical play style is proving to be a great fit with the Pistons early in his career.

Javonte Green is the only remaining Pistons player to appear in every game. He made three starts this season due to extensive injuries on the roster, but he’s primarily played off the bench in his first season in a Detroit uniform.

Without Holland, expect an uptick in minutes for fellow forwards Isaiah Stewart and Paul Reed when the Pistons want to run bigger or possibly wings Caris LeVert and Green to have their roles magnified in smaller lineups.
