Chelsea have stepped up their interest in Rennes centre-back Jeremy Jacquet, according to reports.
Writing on his Substack, journalist Simon Phillips said that the Blues have been sending representatives to watch the France Under-21 international in action in recent weeks.
“Chelsea are stepping up regular scouting missions of Rennes centre back Jeremy Jacquet. I’ve now had his name mentioned to me from a couple of sources in the last week or so, which usually means that the interest is very serious.”
Jacquet had started every single game for Rennes until he was sent off during the 5-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain earlier this month.
The defender missed the subsequent 3-1 win over Stade Brestois due to suspension, and he wasn’t in the matchday squad for the win over Les Sables VF in the French Cup on Sunday.

Jacquet has drawn comparisons with an Arsenal player
Observers have mentioned similarities between the 20-year-old and William Saliba. They both show plenty of composure on the ball, while they do not shirk their defensive responsibilities either.
Jacquet has very limited experience of top-flight football, though, having played just 33 times in Ligue One, so he still pretty early on in his development.
Chelsea may face competition from other Premier League clubs
Arsenal were actually the first English club to be linked with Jacquet earlier this year. Fabrizio Romano mentioned his name as a potential Gunners target back in early August.
Since then, Liverpool have been credited with an interest by other sources, but it appears Chelsea are the ones likeliest to make a bid.
Jacquet only signed a new contract with Rennes back in May, keeping him with the French side until the summer of 2029. It means he won’t be available on the cheap if Enzo Maresca‘s side do make an approach for him in January or at the end of the season.
