Liverpool could splash the cash on new signings once the January transfer window opens

Liverpool ‘could be busy’ again once the January transfer window opens for business, despite their record-breaking spending spree over the summer.

The Reds splashed out a record £446 million on new players this year. They broke their club record twice with the arrivals of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, who cost more than half of their eye-watering grand total.

But despite signing Wirtz, Isak and Hugo Ekitike, Liverpool are once again looking to bolster their options in attack. Isak’s injury is a huge blow to Arne Slot’s attack, and the uncertainty over Mohamed Salah’s future also leaves the Reds searching for a new right-winger.

Liverpool planning to sign three new players in January

Alongside a long-term replacement for Salah, Liverpool have other areas of concern to address.

According to Sky Sports, the Reds could be busy once the window opens as they consider signing three new players. The report claims the Premier League champions have plans to sign a centre-back, winger and central midfielder, which ‘could be accelerated’ as we rapidly approach the new year.

Antoine Semenyo is arguably Liverpool’s top target right now and they received a boost last week when it was reported that the Bournemouth star prefers Anfield as a destination over anywhere else.

Manchester United and Manchester City are also in the running but Liverpool appear to be the favourites at this point.

Marc Guehi also remains a top target for the Reds. They missed out on signing the Crystal Palace captain over the summer when the Eagles pulled the plug on a move in the 11th hour of Deadline Day. Liverpool are still eager to sign Guehi but they now face serious competition from other clubs.

“He is leaving his agents to assess his options, and they have told him he literally is going to have his pick of clubs. His people told him he is going to be one of the most wanted free agents of all time, if he leaves on a free, and that is exactly how things are panning out,” a source recently told TEAMtalk.

What are Liverpool’s biggest concerns for 2026?

Liverpool’s season has been a whirlwind so far and they could be set to lose significant players in 2026.

Finding a long-term replacement for Salah is a top priority, especially as his future is now more uncertain than ever. Following his bombshell comments and reignited interest from Saudi Arabia, the Egyptian star has been linked with a move away from Anfield next year.

The Reds are also desperate for new options across their backline. Ibrahima Konate is still yet to sign a new deal at Anfield and could leave the club as a free agent next summer.

Joe Gomez’s future is also up for discussion. The centre-back recently picked up another injury, which could make up Liverpool’s mind when it comes to selling him on. Gomez came close to leaving the club this summer but a deal with AC Milan collapsed in the final hours of Deadline Day.

With Virgil van Dijk also turning 35 next summer, Liverpool are in need of new centre-back options sooner rather than later, especially following this season’s struggles.
