Arne Slot has spoken more on Alexander Isak’s injury concern after it was confirmed that he underwent surgery for a lower leg fracture.
Liverpool’s festive preparations were rocked on Monday night with the confirmation of what many had feared: Alexander Isak is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
The Christmas cheer around Anfield has been somewhat muted over the last 24 hours following the medical update that every supporter was dreading. After the Swedish striker was forced off over the weekend, speculation was rife regarding the severity of the issue, and the club provided clarity late yesterday evening.
In an official statement released on Monday night, Liverpool confirmed that Isak has undergone successful surgery for a lower leg fracture:
“Alexander Isak today successfully underwent surgery on the injury he sustained on Saturday. The Liverpool striker was injured in a challenge in the process of scoring the opening goal against Tottenham Hotspur and had to be substituted. After diagnosis, an operation was completed today on an ankle injury that included a fibula fracture. Isak’s rehabilitation will now continue at the AXA Training Centre, with no timeframe yet placed on his return.”
While no specific timeframe was placed on his recovery in the initial release, the nature of the injury all but guarantees a significant absence for the summer signing. The timing is not ideal, arriving during the congested holiday fixtures and with Mohamed Salah already now at AFCON.
Arne Slot, speaking in his pre-Wolverhampton press conference, has now suggested Isak will be out for a “couple of months”:
“It’s going to be a long injury, he will be out for a couple of months. It’s a big, big, disappointment for him, and as a result also for us.”
When quizzed on whether it means that January business could be accelerated, Slot said:
“My only thoughts are on the upcoming two games, two difficult ones again, two home ones which is nice. It’s time for the players available to roll their sleeves up and our fans as well to help us get the best possible results.”
“The players who are available need to give everything they have and the fans, which they usually do. That’s my focus.”
