Plymouth Argyle defender Brendan Galloway was an unused substitute as Zimbabwe suffered late heartbreak when losing to Egypt in their first match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Liverpool star Mo Salah scored in the first minute of added time as Egypt came from behind to beat Zimbabwe 2-1 in their Group B game in Agadir.

Prince Dube had given Zimbabwe the lead in the 20th minute and they held onto that advantage until the 64th minute when Manchester City's Omar Marmoush equalised for Egypt, seven times winners of the tournament.

Zimbabwe's Romanian coach Mario Marinica used four substitutes during the match but Galloway, who has the squad number of 13 for the Warriors, was not among them.

In the other opening Group B game, South Africa were 2-1 winners against Angola in Marrakesh, with Burnley striker Lyle Foster scoring the decisive goal in the 79th minute.

Galloway, who has played seven times for his country, and his Zimbabwe team-mates will now prepare for the second of their three group games at AFCON, which is against Angola in Marrakesh on Boxing Day.

They will then play South Africa, also in Marrakesh, on Monday, December 29. The top two teams of each group, along with the best four third-placed teams out of six, will advance to the round of 16.

Argyle played their first match without Galloway due to his AFCON call-up when they went to Doncaster Rovers on Saturday and came out on top 5-1, with Lorent Tolaj completing a hat-trick.
