What people close to Liverpool target Marc Guehi are now saying about a future transfer - journalist

Liverpool have been trying to sign Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace since the summer.

The Reds had a £35m offer for Guehi rejected in the last window, leaving them short of centre-back options this season.

As January approaches, a potential move for the Crystal Palace centre-back has been mooted once more.

Guehi will become a free agent at the end of June 2026, and while foreign clubs can agree a pre-contract from January 1, Liverpool would have to pay up to land the England international next month.

Marc Guehi expected to stay at Crystal Palace

However, a potential mid-season move, at present at least, does not seem very likely.

Fabrizio Romano has now shared what people ‘close to Marc Guehi’ are saying about his future, and they expect the stopper to remain at Selhurst Park in 2025/26 before moving for free later next year.

Romano said: “What I can tell you today is the status of the story for Marc Guehi before Christmas. I say as of now because in the market, you never know what happens. My job is not to predict the future, it’s to tell you what’s happening today.

“And as of today, there is still nothing advanced with any club for January. The feeling of those close to Marc Guehi is that the most likely outcome of the story is a move in the summer on a free transfer, staying at Crystal Palace until the end of the season, and then join his favourite club in the summer.

“There is Liverpool in the race. There is Bayern in the race. There are more English clubs, including Man City also calling.”

Jamie Carragher predicts Liverpool could move away from Marc Guehi

If Guehi is indeed off the cards in January, it still seems pretty clear Liverpool need another centre-back.

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are the only fit options right now, and even when Joe Gomez returns, he’s expected to be competing for a place at right-back.

However, Jamie Carragher has a theory about Liverpool signing Guehi and is now of the opinion that the club could look for a different type of player amid Konate’s form.

He said: “I’ve actually got a theory on Marc Guehi. I think Liverpool should have done a deal, and it’s blown up in their face.

“But when Liverpool were going to do the deal for Marc Guehi, it wasn’t to come in and replace Konate, it was to provide competition, and fight for a place.

“I think with the form of Konate, I think Liverpool should be looking for someone to replace Konate and become first-choice, and that’s different.

“Marc Guehi is a very good centre-back, but he’s not as big as Konate. Liverpool have had a problem this season with set-pieces and long throws, so I’d find it strange to bring in a centre-back smaller than the one you’ve got.

“In general play, I’m sure he will perform better than Konate, but I don’t know if Liverpool’s focus will change to someone who is six foot three, six foot four, maybe a long-term replacement for Virgil van Dijk.”
