The January window is just around the corner, and it seems the Premier League arms race is heating up.
Liverpool are serious contenders in the race to sign Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo. The Ghanaian attacker only penned a new deal at the Vitality Stadium in July, which features a £60 million release clause alongside an additional £5 million in potential performance-related bonuses that could be triggered in January. However, that figure is expected to drop to around £50 million if any move is delayed until the summer transfer window.
The former Bristol City forward has already chipped in with eight goals and three assists in the Premier League this term, and seems to be a nailed-on exit at Bournemouth – whether in January or in the summer.
While there is plenty of competition from the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United, a new player has now emerged in the growing saga. Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol has reported that Chelsea have made an enquiry for Semenyo with a view of a potential January deal:
“Chelsea have made an enquiry about signing Antoine Semenyo in January. They are looking at the conditions of a possible deal. They are one of many interested clubs.”
Interestingly, Solhekol previously reported that Liverpool are viewed as Semenyo’s preferred destination if they decide to firm up their interest, with the club long-term admirers of the forward.
It’s asserted that Liverpool has a history of moving decisively for attacking targets in January, often stepping in late to beat rival clubs to a deal, and suggests there could be further internal discussions at Anfield in the coming days and weeks over whether to launch a push for the Bournemouth star.
