Matt Law finally explains Chelsea’s transfer plans after disaster season for two players

Transfer season is closing in, and Matt Law was on the London is Blue podcast today talking about Chelsea’s transfer plans.

He confirmed rumours from earlier in the week that the Blues were going to focus on their midfield in the windows ahead, having missed Dario Essugo and Romeo Lavia all season injured.

Chelsea to focus on midfield improvements after depth disaster

“It was said to me, ‘if you keep having to play right backs in midfield, you clearly need another midfielder.’ A lot of the analysis and a lot of the homework is going into the midfield at the moment, I think it’s more of a summer thing. It’s going to be focused around the midfield,” Law said.

“I wonder whether Essugo, because he’s had such a false start to life in English football, I wonder whether they now think next season he’s going to need a loan or something, having gone through what he’s gone through and such a lack of minutes.”

“I think with Lavia they’ve going to have to plan for the fact that Lavia you can’t count on his availability.”

That’s putting it mildly. After the run he’s had, we’d suspect their thinking has gone far beyond that to the stage. They surely have reached the point where they ignore him in their squad planning entirely and consider him a lost cause to some degree.

Chelsea could only manage a draw against Newcastle in the week, but it seems like they learned some important lessons there that could come in handy as the season goes on.

Jamie Carragher picked his team of the season so far and didn’t have a single Chelsea player in there – however he did apologise for leaving one man out who came very close to cracking his XI.
