Enzo Maresca’s crazy outburst aimed at those above him at Chelsea a couple of weeks ago has been explained as an attempt to force his way out of the club, with a return to Manchester City next summer potentially on the cards.

On the London is Blue podcast this week, Telegraph writer Matt Law tried to explain why this wasn’t looking likely:
“Is this all heading towards him going to Man City? To be honest, I’m not sure. It would cost Man City a fortune to hire Enzo Maresca – or any other Premier League club to hire him,” Law explained.
“I don’t quite know how it would with an overseas club. But certainly any Premier League club who’s looking at this situation thinking ‘we might try to take advantage of this situation and hire Enzo Maresca – Chelsea paid £15m to hire Graham Potter, up to £21m with all his staff. Pure speculation, but I’m guessing would want that sort of money for Enzo Maresca to stay in the Premier League and not be managing Chelsea, given the length of his contract.”

In other news…
Another subject discussed by Law on the podcast was a lack of depth in midfield thanks to injuries to Romeo Lavia and Dario Essugo, and how it has cost Chelsea at times this season. It sounds like something Enzo Maresca and the transfer team are going to have to address sooner rather than later.
Chelsea could only manage a draw against Newcastle in the week, but it seems like they learned some important lessons there that could come in handy as the season goes on.
