Jamie Carragher apologised to Chelsea fans while explaining why Moises Caicedo missed out on his Team of the Season picks.
Caicedo Left Out By Jamie Carragher
Moises Caicedo has quietly put together a huge season for Chelsea. He is often doing the hard work that rarely makes headlines. His energy, tackling, and control in midfield have stood out even during a mixed campaign for the club. Although, Jamie Carragher left him out of his Premier League Team of the Season so far.
After the Fulham vs Nottingham Forest clash on Monday night, Carragher addressed the reaction. He admitted the decision was tough and said he understood why Chelsea supporters were upset.
On Sky Sports, Carragher said: “I’ve said I think Declan Rice just has the edge on Caicedo.
“I just felt the impact of Xhaka this season, he’s had the biggest impact of a signing or effect on a team, he’s so important to Sunderland, he had to be in the team.
“So, I apologize to Chelsea fans, which I seem to do a lot, but I couldn’t find room for Caicedo.”
Rice and Xhaka Get the Nod Over Caicedo
Carragher explained that Declan Rice and Granit Xhaka edged ahead because of their overall effect on their teams. Rice has driven Arsenal through big games, while Xhaka has been central to Sunderland’s system. The ex-Liverpool defender felt both midfielders shaped matches more often and delivered in decisive moments.
That reasoning did little to calm Chelsea fans. They believe Caicedo has been among the league’s most reliable performers. His role may be less flashy, but his balance and discipline have allowed others to shine.
Carragher closed the debate by repeating his apology and praising Caicedo’s growth. That makes it clear the snub was about fine margins, not failure.
Author’s opinion:
Caicedo deserved stronger consideration for his consistency and discipline. Sometimes the quiet performers are judged too harshly.
