Newcastle United have contacted Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) for clarification over why they were not awarded a penalty against Chelsea. The score ended level at St James' Park as Trevoh Chalobah took out Anthony Gordon in the area.
Referee Andy Madley did not award a spotkick and was not sent to his monitor after VAR looked at the incident. Newcastle fans and players were aghast, while commentator Ally McCoist reckoned it was a 'stonewall' penalty.
Clarifying the decision, the Premier League Match Centre wrote on X: "The referee's call of no penalty to Newcastle was checked and confirmed by VAR - with the contact from Chalobah on Gordon deemed to be side-to-side in a shielding action and the ball within playing distance."
And Magpies boss Eddie Howe has confirmed the club have reached out to try and understand how the officials arrived at their decision. The former Bournemouth coach cannot understand how such a challenge was permitted.
"Yes, we will be seeking clarification [from PGMOL] and those calls have already gone in, not from me personally but from the club," he said in his press conference. "We just want to know the thought process behind the decisions.
"I wouldn't want to train them to deliver those kind of challenges in the box because you are going to give the referees a decision to make. I think one of the arts of defending is not to put yourself in that position.
"I thought, and I still do, it was a clear penalty having reviewed it, and I have not changed my mind."
Newcastle gave up a two-goal lead in the Premier League clash as the Blues came from behind to secure a point. Nick Woltemade's brace handed the Magpies an advantage before Reece James scored an impressive free kick.
Gordon was then denied a penalty before Joao Pedro claimed the equaliser. Howe wants to avoid such comebacks going forward.

"That is something we are working continually on," he said. "I think you work on all aspects of your game. There's sort of the game management stuff, but the general stuff of football coaching doesn't change regardless of time.
"They [Chelsea] scored a free kick from a range where we are a little bit disappointed with some of the details that we could have done better than the actual free kick.
"And then the second goal from the goalkeeper's kick, we made a couple of errors again. They are things we need to focus on, timing of the goals is irrelevant, really. It's more about how they are constructed."
