Everton were denied a penalty opportunity in their latest Premier League clash against Arsenal

Jamie Carragher has weighed in on the latest bank of Premier League results and believes Everton will be unhappy after seeing the highlights from Fulham vs Nottingham Forest on Monday.

Marco Silva’s Fulham edged out a 1-0 win thanks to a Raul Jimenez penalty in first half stoppage time. The three points puts them 13th in the table heading into the festive period, while Forest are hovering just one place above the relegation zone. While Fulham benefited from a penalty in their match, Carragher believes Everton will be feeling hard done by, as a similar opportunity was waved away when they faced Arsenal at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The win came courtesy of a Viktor Gyokeres penalty, which was awarded following a Jake O’Brien handball inside the box. Later in the game, Everton were denied a spot-kick of their own after calls for a foul on Thierno Barry.

William Saliba clipped Barry’s foot while both players went for a loose ball but Everton’s calls for a penalty were dismissed. Carragher has weighed in on the no-penalty decision and believes David Moyes will be frustrated seeing it back, especially when comparing it to the penalty Fulham were given.

Silva’s side were awarded their spot-kick after a similar scenario saw Brazilian players Douglas Luiz and Kevin involved in a battle for the ball. Luiz made an initial block and then lunged in again while on the ground in attempt to swipe the ball but made contact with Kevin, who was in full stretch in attempt to keep the chance alive.

“Yeah, I mean, when you actually slow it down, probably it looks a little bit worse as every challenge does in that situation. And I keep going back to it because of maybe something that’s happened this weekend involving Arsenal and Everton,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.

“I think if David Moyes sat at home, you’re probably looking at it and thinking, well, how did we not get a penalty?”

Why did Everton not get a penalty against Arsenal?

Following Everton’s defeat to Arsenal, The Premier League Match Centre wrote: “The referee’s call of no penalty to Everton was checked and confirmed by VAR – with it deemed the contact from Saliba on Barry wasn’t sufficient for a penalty.”

Mark Clattenburg has also weighed in on the situation and has backed the decision made on the pitch as the correct one.

“Thierno Barry and William Saliba both go for the ball with Barry winning the ball before Saliba kicks the boot of Barry resulting in Barry going down,” the former referee told Everton News.

“In Europe, this would have resulted in a penalty but Premier League referees have a high threshold on these type of challenges when both players are going for a bouncing ball. This call should stay with the referee call and could have gone either way.”
