Semenyo alternative: Liverpool eyeing move to sign record-breaking striker after Isak injury -…

Liverpool are plotting an 'extraordinary' move to sign Igor Thiago this month.

The Reds are facing a real dilemma in attack following the news that Alexander Isak will face an extended spell on the sidelines after undergoing surgery on an ankle injury and broken fibula.

While it's unclear exactly how long the Swedish star will be out for, Arne Slot is facing a big decision regarding what's next for his attacking line.

Liverpool are fifth in the Premier League table right now and can't afford any more slip-ups if they're to stand any chance of catching table-toppers Arsenal before the end of the campaign.

Liverpool Target Brentford Star

Liverpool could be tempted to make an audacious move to sign Brentford star Igor Thago. According to Caught Offside, the Reds see the striker as an ideal stylistic fit for Arne Slot's system.

Having joined the Bees from Club Brugge for a fee worth £30million over the summer, the Brazilian star has been hugely impressive, scoring 11 goals in 17 appearances for Keith Andrews' side. In doing so, he became a record-breaking star as the earliest Brentford player to hit double figures for goals.

Described as 'immense' by head coach Andrews, the report states that Brentford would require an 'extraordinary' offer in order to be tempted into a deal midway through the season.

The Reds Can't Take Any Risks In January

News of Alexander Isak's injury is a real blow with the ex-Newcastle star finally starting to find his feet in the Red of Liverpool. For Slot, he can't afford to navigate the next couple of months with limited options in attack.

It's been suggested that Isak could be out for at least a couple of months, while Mohamed Salah is likely to be missing until late January as a result of his AFCON campaign with Egypt.

Given that Liverpool have ground to make up on Arsenal and Man City ahead of them, it's so important that they don't try and coast through this period. After all, results are paramount after such a slow start to the campaign.

The Reds need to put in a genuine challenge to retain the Premier League title, while they'll also want to go as far as possible in the Champions League.

It's worth remembering that Slot is already under a bit of pressure after a poor autumn, so for him, it's essential that he doesn't try to cut any corners. Whether it's signing Thiago or Antoine Semenyo, it's important that Liverpool don't leave themselves short of options.
