Arsenal will face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semi-final after beating Crystal Palace on penalties at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.

The last Carabao Cup quarter-final tie had to be rearranged for two days before Christmas due to Crystal Palace’s Europa Conference League commitments last week.

A London derby that presented chances for both sides looked to be settled by an own goal as Maxence Lacroix had the misfortune of turning the ball into his own net after Palace failed to deal with a Bukayo Saka corner.

However, Marc Guehi equalised in injury time to send the tie into penalties where Kepa Arrizabalaga was the hero for Arsenal as he saved from Maxence Lacroix to secure an 8-7 win.

This result means Mikel Arteta’s side have reached the Carabao Cup semi-final in back-to-back seasons, though they will hope for a better experience 12 months on having been beaten comfortably by Newcastle across two legs.

Arsenal were by far the dominant team in the first-half but couldn’t turn that into goals, thanks in part to an inspired goalkeeping display from Walter Benitez - deputising for Dean Henderson.

The Argentine conceded seven goals against the Gunners while playing for PSV Eindhoven in a Champions League fixture last season and was determined to not relieve such an experience.

Benitez made a superb stop to keep out a header from Gabriel Jesus before twice saving from Noni Madueke to leave the home side frustrating heading into the break.
