The goalkeeper took to social media to confirm his latest coaching move
Former MK Dons goalkeeper David Martin is helping the future generation of shot-stoppers at Premier League Chelsea.
The 39-year-old made nearly 350 appearances for Dons in three spells, being the unquestionable number one from 2010-2016.
He began his route into coaching at West Ham United in 2020, and it continued during his third spell at MK1 in 2022, taking responsibility for the goalkeepers after Lewis Price was diagnosed with cancer, and later joining Dean Lewington and Bradley Johnson as part of the interim coaching staff following Liam Manning’s sacking.
Leaving for Southend and later joining Ipswich Town as a player-coach, Martin had been at Portman Road during their time in the Premier League.
Departing last summer though, Martin has taken up a role at Stamford Bridge, helping to bring through keepers from the academy.
“It’s been an amazing 6 months for me and my coaching development,” he wrote on social media.
“To have been the Assistant GK Coach at Ipswich last season and then be offered the role at Chelsea as the 16–21s GK Manager, working with so many incredible people and world‑leading coaches, has been invaluable.”
Martin has something of a history with Chelsea too. During his time at West Ham, injuries to Lukasz Fabianski and Roberto meant he was handed his Hammers and Premier League debut. In a brilliant performance in 2019, Martin would keep a clean sheet as West Ham went on to beat Chelsea 1-0
