Mohamed Salah makes history with Egypt

Egypt got their campaign underway on Monday evening, securing a 2-1 win over Zimbabwe.

Salah scored the winner in the 91st minute of action as thousands of fans watched the Liverpool ace for free.

The national media’s verdict on the 33-year-old was mixed, with some suggesting he did little of note before scoring.

But regardless of his overall performance, Salah did score and has now made history as a result.

As per Opta, his winner against Zimbabwe means the Liverpool player is the first Egyptian to score in five editions of the AFCON.

Egypt have not won the competition since 2010 and face a number of top teams during this season’s edition, including Sadio Mane’s Senegal.

Sadio Mane set AFCON record as Senegal beat Botswana

Mane and Salah formed a brilliant connection at Liverpool for many years before the former left to join Bayern Munich.

Senegal kicked off their AFCON campaign on Tuesday with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Botswana.

Mane did not score in the match, but he has, as per Opta, set his own record following the match.

The 33-year-old managed six shots on target against Botswana, which is the most by a player on record [since 2010] in an AFCON fixture.

Mane’s Senegal return to action against DR Congo on Saturday, while Salah’s Egypt take on South Africa on Boxing Day.
