Liverpool will look to make it three consecutive Premier League victories when they host Wolves at Anfield on Saturday, but Arne Slot’s side must first readjust to life without Alexander Isak following his serious injury last weekend. The Swedish striker came off the bench at half-time and needed just 11 minutes to put Liverpool ahead, only to suffer a broken leg.
Isak has since undergone surgery and, while no official timetable has been provided, he is expected to be sidelined for at least several months. Hugo Ekitike has, however, proven to be the more productive and reliable striker signed this summer, scoring eight Premier League goals compared to Isak’s one. The Frenchman is more than capable of leading the line on his own, though Isak’s absence significantly reduces Slot’s attacking depth. That concern is heightened by Mohamed Salah’s departure for Africa Cup of Nations duty and Dominik Szoboszlai’s suspension for Saturday’s clash.
Still, this fixture may come at an ideal time for the Reds. Wolves arrive at Anfield as the Premier League’s only remaining winless side, having collected just two points from 17 matches. They are on course for a historically poor campaign, owning the league’s weakest attack with only nine goals scored and the worst defensive record, having conceded 37 times.
Speaking ahead of the game, Arne Slot said: “Every game in the Premier League is a dangerous game or a difficult game. But I see the same as what you were just saying that their results throughout the whole season haven’t been what they were hoping for but they come closer and closer to results – especially Arsenal away, of course, where they were very close to a result over there. As always, there’s a challenge in every Premier League game and that’s the same for this one.”
