Liverpool have been dealt a knock-back in their pursuit of Antoine Semenyo

Liverpool are turning their attention to other attacking targets ahead of the January transfer window, following reports they have missed the boat with Antoine Semenyo.

Liverpool have been heavily linked with Semenyo in recent months as they search for a long-term successor to Mohamed Salah. The Cherries winger had reportedly agreed personal terms with the Reds but he had also spoken with Man City, putting the two rivals level in the race.

Now, it seems City have edged themselves in front, forcing Liverpool back to the drawing board. Fortunately, they already have a target they are pursuing.

Liverpool line up ‘prime alternative’ to Antoine Semenyo

According to CaughtOffside, Liverpool are ‘already recalibrating’ their approach to signing a new wide player next month. As Semenyo reportedly prefers the idea of joining Man City, the Reds have identified Bradley Barcola as a ‘prime alternative’ to the Ghana international.

Barcola is not a new name on Liverpool’s radar but it seems they are stepping up their interest now Semenyo could be off the table. The Paris Saint-Germain star is naturally a left-winger but he can play on the right and as a centre-forward as well.

The 23-year-old put himself on the radar of multiple clubs over the summer following his fruitful season in France. Barcola ended the 2024/25 campaign with 21 goals and 21 assists in all competitions.

Liverpool have ‘intensified’ their interest in the winger recently as they view him as a ‘long-term solution’ in their attack, who can elevate the Reds’ performances going forward.

Arne Slot is a ‘strong admirer’ of Barcola, who is now one of the most sought-after figures in Ligue 1. The PSG star is under contract in the capital until 2028 but recent talks over a potential extension have stalled.

Bradley Barcola new contract talks stall with PSG

Talks have reportedly hit a bump in the road between Barcola and PSG. Naturally, the French champions are eager to tie the winger down to a new deal but negotiations have recently ‘stalled’.

While PSG value and trust Barcola as a senior member of the team, the player and his representatives want to ‘fully assess’ his other options before they commit to new terms at Parc des Princes.

This hesitation in commitment from Barcola’s camp has now alerted top clubs across Europe who have been keeping tabs on the 23-year-old’s situation. Interested teams, including Liverpool, are watching closely for a potential opening to swoop in and sign Barcola.

The Reds could potentially be without Salah until late January, depending on how far Egypt reach at the Africa Cup of Nations. As well as his current absence, there is uncertainty surrounding his future at the club, with reports suggesting he could move to Saudi Arabia in 2026.
