Maradona’s iconic ‘Battle of the Bernabeu’ Barcelona shirt breaks records nearly 40 years later

According to a recent report from Mundo Deportivo, one of the most iconic pieces of football history linked to FC Barcelona has just set a remarkable new benchmark at auction.

A match-worn shirt used by Diego Armando Maradona during his time at Barça has fetched just over €150,000, making it the most expensive Maradona club jersey ever sold.

What makes this story even more extraordinary is the journey of the shirt itself.

An interesting story

After a fierce and unforgettable match against Athletic Club, Maradona removed the jersey and handed it over as usual to the woman responsible for collecting, washing, and preparing the kits for the next game.

However, the encounter had been so intense and physical that the shirt was badly torn, ripped open at the chest. Considering it unusable, she decided to discard it.

Instead of throwing it away, she passed it on in its damaged state to a friend who owned a bar.

Years later, the shirt was inherited by his son, who unknowingly possessed a true football treasure.

Nearly three decades later, the heir contacted Matchday Football Auctions, convinced that what he had in his possession was something special. He was absolutely right.

Breaking records

This was no ordinary Barcelona shirt. It was the jersey Maradona wore during the infamous ‘Battle of the Bernabeu’, the heated 1984 Copa del Rey final against Athletic Bilbao.

That night remains one of the most controversial and talked-about matches in Spanish football history, further adding to the shirt’s symbolic value.

Matchday confirmed that the shirt was sold for $145,648.51. Once the 23% commission was added, the final price reached $179,207.67, which translates to approximately €152,000.

This figure not only sets a record for a Maradona club jersey but also places the item among the most valuable pieces of football memorabilia ever sold.
