Hannover 96 officially appoint former Liverpool man as sporting director

Hannover 96 are one of the most famous clubs in Germany.

Two times Bundesliga champions, their most recent major trophy was when they won the DFB-Pokal in the 1991-92 season.

However, the club is currently going through a bit of a transition period.

Hannover 96 are currently 5th in 2. Bundesliga as the team fight to return back to Germany’s top flight.

And it’s not just on the pitch that the club are going through a rebuilding stage.

Off the pitch, the club are also making changes and it’s in the boardroom where some significant changes have been made.

And it’s the role of sporting director that is the centre of those changes.

It all started as Red Bull Salzburg officially name Marcus Mann as their new sporting director.

Mann was sporting director at Hannover 96 since 2021 and has now moved to the Red Bull football family by taking the same role in Salzburg.

So that left a role for Hannover to fill and they’ve turned to a former Liverpool man to fill the role.

Hannover 96 have officially hired Jorg Schmadtke as their new sporting director.

The club announced the news on their website and confirmed that Schmadtke has signed a 3 year contract with the club.

Jorg Schmadtke most recently served as sporting director at Liverpool until February 2024 when he left the club.

“I am very happy to be back and to take on the task at Hannover 96,” Schtmadtke told the Hannover 96 website.

“Now it’s about getting to work quickly.

“First of all, I would like to get a comprehensive picture quickly and will have many conversations to get to know the internal processes, structures and points of view”.

Jorg Schmadtke moved to Liverpool from Germany, where he was working at VfL Wolfsburg, and he’s now returning home to continue his career.

Liverpool fans will be looking to see if there’s any transfer discussions that take place between the two clubs during his reign at Hannover 96.
