Liverpool cult hero has contract with club terminated after not playing for them in 942 days

A Liverpool cult hero, still only 30 years old, has had his contract terminated this week after not playing for his most recent club in 942 days. It’s a Christmas present no footballer would want to receive and marks a sad decline for a player who won it all during his time at Anfield.

The footballer in questionlast played a professional match for his parent club on May 28, 2023, in AC Milan’s Serie A clash with Juventus. Since then, he has been training away from the club in an effort to regain fitness. But it’s unfortunately safe to say that he will never reach his Liverpool-best level again, a time when he was Jurgen Klopp’s saviour on many occasions.

Although he briefly returned to the Premier League last season on a loan deal, Divock Origi is no longer the clinical super-sub the Kop will undoubtedly remember him as.

Origi moved to the San Siro back in 2022 following the expiration of his Liverpool contract, but two-and-a-half years on, and the beloved Belgian is being forced to look for a new club again. In all, he only found the back of the net twice in 36 appearances for the Rossoneri, while his season-long loan at Nottingham Forest last term produced no Premier League goals at all.

The Serie A side confirmed Origi’s exit with a brief 26-word statement. It read: “AC Milan can confirm the termination of Divock Origi’s contract by mutual consent. The Club would like to wish him all the best for the future.”

According to French outlet L’Equipe, Origi had been earning around £65,000 a week at AC Milan. Meanwhile, Italian paper Gazzetta dello Sport report that the forward categorically resisted all transfer interest following his Forest loan, despite his last appearance of any kind coming as a substitute against Everton on April 21, 2024.

Following the conclusion of the 2024 summer transfer window, it was concluded that Origi would train away from AC Milan. The ex-Red reportedly split his time between Rome and Florence while working with a personal trainer, as per The Sun.

Liverpool signed Origi for just £10 million in 2014, but it wasn’t until Klopp took the reins in October 2015 that the Belgian truly earned his stripes. Under the German’s stewardship, few strikers in the club’s recent history matched his prolific record, particularly in high-pressure moments.

During his eight years at Anfield, he enjoyed a memorable purple patch in 2019, scoring in the Champions League semi-final win over Barcelona, the winning goal in the final against Tottenham, and a last-minute Merseyside derby winner against Everton. In total, he scored 41 goals in 175 appearances for the Reds. While finding the back of the net became second nature for Origi, his goals often felt particularly significant, with many of his crucial contributions coming from the bench in high-stakes situations.
