Christmas Day at Madison Square Garden delivered one of those games that feels destined to be replayed every December. Tyler Kolek turned into the Grinch who stole Cleveland’s holiday, emerging in the fourth quarter to spark a stunning 126-124 win and cap one of the wildest comebacks of the season.
Early in the final period, things looked bleak. Trailing 103-86, the Knicks appeared out of answers. Then Tyler the Creator took over. Kolek scored 11 of his 16 points in the fourth, went a perfect 3-3 from three, consistently found open teammates, and delivered a jaw-dropping clean block on Donovan Mitchell after a bad pass gave Mitchell a clear runway to the rim. That sequence flipped the energy in the building, and chants of “TY-LER KO-LEK” poured down from the stands.
As much as Kolek was the spark, this comeback belonged to the entire group. Jalen Brunson carried the scoring load with a game-high 34 points, knocking down 6-12 from deep, including a massive three with 1:05 left that put the Knicks up 121-119. Karl-Anthony Towns followed with a crucial tip shot to extend the lead, before Mitchell and OG Anunoby traded emphatic dunks in a tense finish.
The final seconds were pure chaos. Holding a four-point lead with 12 seconds left, things seemed under control until Mitchell drilled a 28-foot three to pull Cleveland within one. With 2.7 seconds left, Towns was fouled immediately. He made the first free throw, missed the second, and with the Cavaliers out of timeouts, Mitchell launched a desperation heave with 1.1 remaining. It came up short, and the Knicks survived.
What made the win even more impressive was the way the game swung back and forth. Cleveland stormed out with a 20-5 start as the Knicks managed just two field goals in the first seven and a half minutes. The Cavaliers took the opening quarter 38-23. The second quarter flipped everything. Cleveland waited more than six minutes for its second made shot while the Knicks erupted on a 24-5 run, outscoring the Cavs 37-20. After halftime, Cleveland struck again, building a 94-80 lead late in the third. The fourth quarter, though, belonged entirely to New York.
Jordan Clarkson delivered a huge night off the bench with 25 points, five threes, and three steals. Kolek added nine assists in addition to his scoring burst. Josh Hart chipped in 15 points and five rebounds before suffering an ankle injury and limping off with 7:43 left in the fourth while the team trailed by 12. He returned later to watch from the bench as the comeback unfolded. Mitchell Robinson did not score, but his presence was massive, grabbing 14 rebounds, including eight on the offensive glass that fueled extra possessions. Mikal Bridges added 12 points and four assists.
Cleveland had plenty of firepower. Donovan Mitchell matched Brunson with 34 points, Darius Garland finished with 20 points and 10 assists, Jaylon Tyson scored 16 off the bench, and Evan Mobley added 14. It was not enough to withstand the late surge.
Christmas Day games are supposed to be memorable. This one delivered drama, momentum swings, and a breakout fourth quarter that turned Tyler Kolek into a holiday legend at Madison Square Garden.
