Arteta has not forgotten Arsenal anger in Albion draw

Mikel Arteta says he has not forgotten scenes which angered Arsenal when [Albion](https://www.theargus.co.uk/sport/albion/?ref=au) drew at the Emirates last season.

The Gunners boss has revealed Declan Rice’s red card in the early-season fixture left him “very p\*\*\*\*\* off”.

Rice was shown a second yellow for kicking the ball away from Joel Veltman as the Albion right-back looked to play a quick free-kick in the direction of Danny Welbeck.

Albion trailed and were second best at the time.

But a submissive Arsenal side quickly went into their shell and sat back when Rice departed.

They were punished by a Joao Pedro equaliser.

The Gunners were furious with the second yellow and pointed out that Joao Pedro had escaped a booking earlier in the game.

But Arteta also made it clear today that part of his enduring unhappiness about that game was down to his own team’s reaction.

He told a press conference: “I remember it very well.

“I was very p\*\*\*\*\* off in the manner that we played with ten men, so hopefully it is going to be very different next time.

“I think the rules are different now. We played a big price with that rule. And hopefully that stays away and we continue to play with 11 players.”

Arsenal could be boosted by the return of Kai Havertz.

The 26-year-old has not been seen since Arsenal’s first match of the season following surgery on his right knee.

However, he returned to training last week and Arteta admitted he was close to making the squad for their Carabao Cup penalty-shootout triumph over Crystal Palace on Tuesday night.

He added: “Let’s see how he responds to the next step, but he is a player that we have missed a lot and a player who brings another dimension to the team. I will be very happy to have him back soon.”

Gabriel Martinelli will face a late fitness test to see if he can be available. Martinelli was withdrawn in the second half against Palace after picking up a knee injury.

Gabriel is closing in on a return from a thigh problem, but the game against the Seagulls will come too soon for the Brazil international.
