Hurzeler on the potential of a back-three system at Arsenal

But he has played down the chances of a repeat formation on Albion’s return to the Emirates.

Hurzeler went with a back three of Diego Coppola, Jan Paul van Hecke and Olivier Boscagli in the Carabao Cup tie with Arsenal two months ago.

Coppola and Boscagli helped Albion to a clean sheet against Sunderland last Saturday but Lewis Dunk and van Hecke are now back from suspension and illness respectively.

Asked whether he could use three of the four centre-backs at Arsenal, Hurzeler told The Argus: “No, at the moment we don't have these thoughts.

“I think we played that way in the Carabao Cup but at the moment the thoughts are not there.

“But it's important to have these options available.

“It's important to know when a player is banned, when a player is injured, when a player is ill, that we have these kind of options, and therefore we have to make decisions.

“But I'm pleased to have this selection.”

Much interest at teamsheet time will focus on whether Danny Welback and Kaoru Mitoma start.

But Diego Gomez offers an interesting decision for Hurzeler as he returns from a one-match ban.

The Paraguay international has at least been getting into good positions from an area to the left of centre and he could get the nod there in the initial XI.

Albion possible XI: Verbruggen; Wieffer/Veltman, van Hecke, Dunk, Kadioglu; Hinshelwood, Ayari; Minteh, Rutter, Gomez; Welbeck.
