Tottenham 1-2 Liverpool: Match Review
Liverpool are said to be among the clubs keen on the La Liga defender.
Liverpool are monitoring a La Liga defender ahead of a potential move, it has been claimed.
According to Spanish outlet AS Diario (via Estadio Deportivo), the Reds are showing an interest in Óscar Mingueza of Celta Vigo. The four-cap Spain international came through Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy and made 66 appearances for the Catalan giants before he joined Vigo in 2022.
Mingueza has been a regular starter for the Galicia-based side. This campaign, the 26-year-old has made 20 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal and recording three assists.
Mingueza is a versatile player, who is capable of playing right-back and centre-back. His current contract at Vigo expires at the end of the season, meaning he will be a free agent and can sign a pre-contract agreement on 1 January.
Mingueza admitted earlier this season that he hoped to stay at Celta but has still to commit his future. "I'm very happy here and everyone knows I'd love to continue,” he said. “Let's enjoy what's left of the year and then we'll see what happens. But my intention is to stay here.”
However, Mingueza’s ongoing situation has reportedly alerted Liverpool, who are likely to be in the market for at least one defender in the summer.
The Reds failed to sign Marc Guehi at the end of last summer’s transfer window, with Crystal Palace pulling the plug at the 11th hour despite a £35 million being agreed. Liverpool remain interested in Guehi but he will be a free agent at the end of the campaign and he reportedly is now wanted by Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
In addition, Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate’s contract comes to a conclusion in June. The France international is still to put pen to paper on fresh terms at Anfield. Konate has been linked with potential moves to Real Madrid, Bayern and Paris Saint-Germain on a free.
Meanwhile, Joe Gomez has had injury issues over the past few years and is currently sidelined with a muscle problem. He’s set to miss the clash against Wolves at Anfield on Saturday.
Arne Slot was recently asked whether Liverpool could look to sign a centre-back in the January transfer window. The Reds head coach replied: “The outside world wants to believe we have unlimited money but that is not true.
“You insiders know – and you are the only ones because the outside world only talks about our spending – what we have brought in [money] to spend. That is the way we work over here. You then have to accept that in certain games during a season you are short of a right full-back. But we are still able to win. I fully believe in that way of working by the way.”
