'Very good' Liverpool star could miss Leeds United clash because of FA rule

Tottenham 1-2 Liverpool: Match Review

Liverpool face Wolves in the Premier League and one of their regular starters is walking a tightrope.

Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate will be forced to walk a suspension tightrope for the next two matches.

The centre-back has started every Premier League and Champions League game for the Reds so far this campaign. It has been somewhat of a mixed season for Konate, having made several high-profile mistakes, contributing to Liverpool’s title defence already being over.

After conceding a penalty in a 3-3 draw at Leeds United, head coach Arne Slot admitted that Konate had been ‘at the crime scene too much’.

But the France international has looked more assured in recent weeks, with Liverpool unbeaten in their past six games. Slot singled out Konate for praise after a 1-0 win over Inter Milan in the Champions League. The Liverpool boss said: “I would like to highlight one player because he's been highlighted a few times also in a negative way and this time I would like to highlight [Ibrahima] Konate, who played a very good game against two very good strikers together with Virgil [van Dijk]. I don't think they made a mistake at all; like I said, we only conceded one chance and that is a big compliment if you play against such a great team.”

However, Konate is currently on four Premier League bookings for the campaign, meaning that he is one more yellow card away from being forced to miss one game. According to The FA's disciplinary rules ‘any player who earns five bookings from their side's first 19 Premier League matches of a season will have to serve a one-match ban in the same competition’

It means that if Konate picks up a caution in Liverpool’s clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, he will have to sit out the visit of Leeds United to Anfield on Thursday 1 January.

Against Wolves, Dominik Szoboszlai is forced to serve a one-match ban. He picked up his fifth yellow card in the 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur last weekend. Conor Bradley has also had to serve a suspension for an accumulation of bookings.
