Chelsea legend could take first step towards dream of managing at Stamford Bridge

Enzo Maresca looks set to manage this Chelsea project for the foreseeable future, but you never know what can happen down the line.

Since taking the reins last season, Maresca has been outstanding for Chelsea.

Despite some turbulence in recent weeks, the Italian has reaffirmed his desire to continue at the helm at Stamford Bridge.

That being said, no manager stays in one job forever, and one of the best to play for the Blues has aspirations of taking the role in the future. Those aspirations would be aided considerably by an opportunity that has just presented itself in the second tier of English football.

Chelsea great John Terry is being linked with Oxford United job

Oxford United sacked previous manager Gary Rowett right before Christmas, and ex-Chelsea captain John Terry is being eyed as a potential replacement.

They currently sit just one position outside of the danger zone, and need some fresh ideas in their bid to stay in the Championship next season.

As The Sun report: “John Terry is one of the names in the frame to be Oxford United’s next boss.

“Terry, 45, has been seeking a route into management in his own right and taking over at the struggling Championship club would give him the breakthrough he has been waiting for.

“Former Rangers and QPR boss Michael Beale is among the favourites for a position that became vacant after Gary Rowett was sacked two days before Christmas. But Terry has long been on the radar of Oxford’s owners.”

The 45-year-old previously interviewed for the role and has remained on Oxford’s shortlist ever since.

Terry dreams of one day managing Chelsea, and getting his first head coach role would help set him on that path.

Terry would be the latest in a long line of greats-turned-managers

Great players becoming managers is becoming increasingly commonplace these days.

Some of the top managers in Europe — Pep Guardiola, Mikel Arteta, Vincent Kompany, Luis Enrique and Xabi Alonso — all played at the highest level before becoming elite coaches.

Even just looking at Chelsea examples, Frank Lampard is eight points clear at the top of the Championship, while Cesc Fabregas is a favourite to be the next Chelsea manager after the job he has done at Como.

It doesn’t always work out. Some players just can’t reach those same heights as a manager.

But Terry has made his ambitions known, and if he gets the Oxford job, he will see it as the first step towards his lofty goal.
