Liverpool submit surprise offer for £17.4m attacker who produced "brilliant" moment this season

Liverpool have reportedly tabled a £17.4m offer for Borussia Dortmund attacker Karim Adeyemi, which would be way below his valuation.

Injuries and form have heightened the need for the Reds to make a signing or two in the January transfer window, with doubts over Mohamed Salah’s future not helping the situation.

Meanwhile, Alexander Isak is expected to be out for a number of months with a broken leg, so Liverpool’s depth feels sparse in attacking areas.

According to a report from Spain, the Reds have bid £17.4m for Dortmund ace Adeyemi, representing a surprise offer that has taken aback the Bundesliga side.

They value the 23-year-old at £65.4m instead, so there is clearly a huge gulf between the two amounts in question. It isn’t specified if the transfer could happen in January or next summer, though.

Would Adeyemi be a shrewd signing by Liverpool?

There is plenty to like about Adeyemi, who is renowned for his blistering pace but also his end product, scoring 32 goals and bagging 22 assists in 129 appearances for Dortmund.

Away from their obvious talent, Liverpool also like to sign good people, and the German outlined his sportsmanship with a great moment against VfL Wolfsburg earlier in the season, being hailed by referee Daniel Siebert after the game:

“I’d like to take a moment, because it’s not so common to see such a brilliant fair play gesture in professional football. Adeyemi voluntarily put the ball out of play because he didn’t want to profit from an opponent’s injury. I think that’s really great, and we’ll record it in the report.”

At 23, Adeyemi is still a young player, even though his longevity suggests otherwise, and he could add depth to Liverpool’s attack, being able to thrive as a right winger primarily, but also on the left flank and as a centre forward.

It could even be that the 11-cap Germany international is being looked at as a long-term replacement for Salah, although the Reds arguably need a more elite wide man to fill that void.

It doesn’t feel likely that Dortmund will be willing to sell Adeyemi for the amount that Liverpool have offered, however, so there may need to be a compromise somewhere in the middle.
