Steven Gerrard admits he nearly returned to club

Steven Gerrard remains one of the most watched former players whenever a managerial job becomes available.

Steven Gerrard remains one of the most watched former players whenever a managerial job becomes available. His name still carries weight in British football, especially after his title-winning spell early in his coaching career and the mixed experiences that followed. Since leaving his last role at the start of the year, Gerrard has stayed visible but distant. He has been around the game without being inside it. Television work, public appearances, and time with family have replaced the daily pressure of the dugout. For many former elite players, the pull of management never truly goes away. But timing matters. Clubs change quickly. Ownership models shift. Expectations rise faster than projects can settle. Gerrard has seen that first-hand. His recent silence on job links made sense to those close to him. The question was not whether he would return, but under what conditions he would even consider it. That context framed the conversation when a familiar opportunity surfaced earlier this year and briefly brought him close to the touchline again.

That opportunity was a return to Rangers. Gerrard confirmed he came close to going back to Ibrox, calling it “perfect” before ultimately deciding against it. Speaking on The Smiths Brothers podcast via GOAL, he explained his current mindset clearly. “I’ve been busy-ish. Loads of free time with the family, with the granddaughter coming.” He added, “We’re trying to be around as much as we can, which is why we’ve moved home.” Gerrard also outlined his current work. “I’m sort of unofficially working with TNT covering Champions League and Premier League matches – they’ve been really accommodating, letting me pick and choose games due to my family situation.” He continued, “So, trying to stay local with the Premier League games and just the odd Champions League.” On management, his stance was firm. “Spoke to a couple of clubs, opportunities that have come up on the phone and unfortunately nothing (is) there at the moment.” He stressed, “I am comfortable and easy with that. I am not looking for a job or steaming for a job.” Reflecting on his recent roles, Gerrard said, “After the last two I do have to make sure it’s the right one.” He then addressed Rangers directly. “I think I suit a certain job; the passionate crowd – I need to try and feed off that.” He admitted, “Rangers was perfect, I was really close to going up there again.” But he explained the decision. “It’s just the timing and a few other situations that weren’t aligned.” From a Liverpool point of view, it is another reminder that Gerrard remains selective, deliberate, and unwilling to force the next chapter of his career.
