Prior to kick-off at the Emirates Stadium, the Gunners had dropped to second in the table after Manchester City beat Nottingham Forest in the lunchtime fixture.
Then followed a couple of defensive setbacks for Arsenal.
Jurrien Timber did not make the matchday squad after picking up a knock late on against Crystal Palace earlier in the week and then Riccardo Calafiori was forced to withdraw from the starting lineup.
Despite this, Martin Odegaard’s first half strike and an own goal from Georginio Rutter ultimately proved to be the difference as Arsenal survived a late scare when Diego Gomez pulled one back for Brighton.
