Liverpool earned a 2-1 victory over Wolves with Florian Wirtz finally scoring his first goal for the club.
Wayne Rooney saluted Florian Wirtz’s overall impact in Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The attacking midfielder finally scored his maiden goal for the Reds since his £100 million move from Bayer Leverkusen. After Ryan Gravenberch opened the scoring in the 41st minute, Wirtz doubled Liverpool’s advantage with a composed finish just a minute later.
Wirtz delivered a man-of-the match performance as Arne Slot’s side signed off 2025 with a victory and moved up to fourth in the Premier League table. And Rooney was impressed by the link-up play between Wirtz and Milos Kerkez during the game. Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, former Manchester United and England captain Rooney said: “It has to be [the highlight of the game] getting his first Premier League goal. I thought he looked good all game, especially his connection with Kerkez. It looked really good, especially in the first half and that is the main positive for Liverpool.”
After finally getting his Liverpool goal account up and running, Wirtz said: "It was very nice the feeling on the pitch with the fans around. I was very happy and I still am.
"I was confident that I would score one day. I wanted to start earlier scoring and assisting but it was like this and I have to accept it. I just know that it will come and I try to keep going like that.
"We played a brilliant first half. We lost the game and got it back. Everyone was working hard. In the last 20 minutes, we made it a bit difficult. I cannot explain why. We have to change that.
"That's how we want to do it. We want to be there and be on top of the table. It's not been an easy start for us but we're doing better and getting the points."
