Klay Thompson and GS Warriors Reunion Becoming Likely This Season?

There seem to be more and more signs that a Klay Thompson reunion with the Golden State Warriors is a possibility this season.

A legendary era in Warriors history officially came to an end last year when Thompson departed in free agency. Taking his talents to the Dallas Mavericks. It was expected, after his numbers declined the last couple of seasons. Nevertheless, it was an exit that stung fans and those inside the organization who went on the journey that saw Thompson, Steph Curry, and Draymond Green win four titles in eight years.

However, there are some signs that a reunion is possible before this year’s trade deadline. On Christmas Day, the Warriors took on Thompson and the Mavericks. In a show of love and respect for his friend and former teammate, Curry wore a pair of Thompson’s signature sneakers during warmups.

Yet that wasn’t the only love he got from his former team. Following Golden State’s victory, Steve Kerr was asked if has gotten used to seeing the veteran guard on the opposing sidelines. In response, the legendary Warriors coach did not hide how much he misses working with Klay Thompson.

“I’ll never get used to seeing Klay on the other side. I miss Klay. Wish he was still here,” said Kerr.

But do the Warriors need Thompson back after they were so willing to let him walk in free agency two summers ago? A case could be made that they don’t. But something has been off since he left.

Should the Warriors Contemplate a Klay Thompson Reunion?

They struggled for much of last season but got hot after trading for Jimmy Butler. Yet, despite looking like a serious title contender late last season, they have been a middle-of-the-road team in 2025-26 and enter the weekend with an underwhelming 16-15 record. While their defense has been good this season, Butler and Green have publicly questioned it. As well as the team’s lack of grit and heart.

Thompson could certainly help bring that back to the team if he returned. But he could also offer a bit more offensive punch, specifically from behind the arc, if he welcomed a bench role his second time around with the Warriors.

Interestingly enough, the Mavericks are in the midst of a bad season, and there have been rumors swirling that the organization will look to move contracts before the trade deadline. One that is expected to be available is Thompson’s.

Is it likely the Warriors make a trade to reunite with Klay Thompson before February’s deadline? Probably not. But should they consider it? Very much yes. Even just to get their legendary trio back together and finish out their contracts in 2026-27 to give the big three one grand send-off.
