Media finally wake up to Florian Wirtz – but “dreadful” set-piece record pointed out

The media assessed Liverpool’s 2-1 win at home to Wolves in measured fashion, admitting that there are still flaws within the team despite the result.

Arne Slot‘s side made it seven matches unbeaten on Saturday afternoon, temporarily jumping to fourth place in the Premier League table.

Here’s the best of the media reaction to Liverpool’s victory.

Liverpool won but cracks were still showing

On X, journalist David Lynch couldn’t hide the fact that the Reds were unconvincing:

“Much like at Spurs, I think a lot of Liverpool fans will come away from this game with a negative feeling based on the latter stages.

“But on both occasions that could have been avoided by not conceding a set-piece. They are truly dreadful at them and something needs to be done.”

The Athletic‘s Gregg Evans focused on Liverpool’s set-piece woes:

“Their inability to defend set pieces was again highlighted as Santiago Bueno’s second-half strike piled the pressure on the hosts for the remainder of the half.

“Liverpool have now conceded 12 goals from set pieces this season — the joint most alongside Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth.

“Only West Ham United (10) have conceded more from corners than Liverpool (seven) and if there’s a stand-out reason why they’re no longer in the title race, you only have to look at those shocking figures.”

Mo Stewart was another who is concerned about this issue in Liverpool’s game:

“Eerily similar to when Wolves came last season. Only difference being they scored from a set piece rather than a Cunha stunner.

“If they don’t fix that issue, this season will only go so far.”

Ciaran Foreman of the Mail was positive about Liverpool’s improved ability to dig deep this season:

“Liverpool didn’t make it easy. They never do, this season.

“But they get the job done, and claim another three points. They’re up to 4th in the Premier League.”

Florian Wirtz stood out most at Anfield

Beth Lindop of ESPN could see the relief on Wirtz’s face after scoring, hailing his Man of the Match display:

“It’s been another afternoon where pretty much everything positive Liverpool have done has gone through Florian Wirtz.

“So often looks the most intelligent player on the pitch. Clear from the goal celebrations it is a weight lifted for him.”

Evans of the Athletic also loved what he saw from Wirtz:

“That it has taken Wirtz 23 games to celebrate a goal of his own also highlights the difficulties he has faced since joining.

“He was cruelly denied the equalising goal against Sunderland a few weeks back as it was recorded as an own goal, but there was no stopping him today.

“His silky skills, clever movement, and slick link-up play with Ekitike made him stand out throughout but the most important moment was, finally, a goal.”

Finally, BBC Sport‘s Aadam Patel analysed one of Wirtz’s best performances yet for Liverpool:

“The 22-year-old started slowly but things are starting to finally click.

“The German played a stunning first-half through ball to Ekitike, who hit the post, and glided past the Wolves players with ease for most of the afternoon.

“When the pair combined again just before half-time, Wirtz showed great composure to finish and the roar inside Anfield told a story of both joy and relief for a man who will surely have many more moments at this ground.

“All in all, this was a far from convincing Liverpool display but Slot will take some comfort from the fact that Wirtz is now delivering.”
