Chelsea will conduct an investigation after a plastic bottle was thrown towards the Aston Villa bench following their 2–1 win at Stamford Bridge.
Villa once again came from behind to secure a league victory, having done so in their previous four Premier League away matches before facing Chelsea. Substitute Ollie Watkins scored twice in the second half, earning Villa an 11th straight win in all competitions.
A total of eight yellow cards were shown to players during what was at times an ill-tempered match, while Villa set-piece coach Austin MacPhee was also booked late on.
Chelsea frustrations appeared to boil over at the final whistle, as a plastic bottle was reportedly thrown towards the Villa bench, showering some staff members with water.
Some Villa staff turned around in disgust, and according to The Telegraph, a member of their staff appeared to indicate that the object had been thrown from the Chelsea dugout area, although this has not been confirmed.
Chelsea are said to have promised full cooperation with Villa and the relevant authorities, if required, to determine exactly where the bottle came from. CCTV footage is expected to be reviewed as part of the investigation.
Villa travel to Arsenal on Tuesday night in search of a 12th consecutive victory, which would mark a new club record.
Unai Emery’s side currently sit three points behind the Premier League leaders ahead of their trip to the Emirates.
