Liverpool have live interest in signing "box office" £65m star, he's "better than Gakpo" -…

Liverpool moved into the top four in the Premier League on Saturday after they extended their winning run to three matches with a 2-1 victory over Wolves at Anfield.

Florian Wirtz finally scored his first goal in the Premier League since his £116m move from Bayer Leverkusen, after Ryan Gravenberch had opened the scoring.

Despite the club's upturn in form in recent weeks, with no defeats in their last six top-flight outings, the Reds are still looking at possible signings to bolster their squad next month.

Liverpool have live interest in Premier League attacker

Arne Slot is seemingly not content with the options that he currently has at his disposal at the top end of the pitch, as the club are in the market to bring in another forward.

According to Football Insider, Liverpool's interest in bringing Bournemouth's versatile attacker Antoine Semenyo to Anfield in the January transfer window is still 'alive'.

The report claims that the Reds have already made contact with the Cherries ahead of a possible move to activate his £65m release clause, which is said to be available for the first half of the window.

It adds, though, that Liverpool are fearful of Manchester City's interest in the Ghana international, as they believe that he would prefer to sign for Pep Guardiola's side.

This means that a deal, despite the club's live interest in signing him, for Semenyo may be incredibly difficult for the Premier League champions to get done.

Why Liverpool should sign Antoine Semenyo

The Reds should still push to win the race for the Bournemouth star until the last minute because he could be a brilliant addition to the squad as an upgrade on Cody Gakpo on the left flank.

Semenyo can play through the middle as a centre-forward or on the right flank, but the majority of his appearances this season, per Transfermarkt, have come on the left, which is where the Dutchman typically plays.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Gabriel Agbonlahor stated that he is "better than Gakpo" and private coach Saul Isaksson-Hurst described him as a "box-office" star who is "electric" in the final third.

Liverpool experienced his electric pace first-hand when they played Bournemouth at the start of the season, as shown in the clip above, as he scored a brilliant goal at Anfield.

That strike is one of nine he has scored in the Premier League in the 2025/26 campaign to date, which is more than twice as many goals as Gakpo has managed in the division.

As you can see in the table above, Semenyo has delivered five more goal contributions in only one more appearance in the top-flight so far this season.

Per Sofascore, the Ghana international also produced 11 goals and five assists in the Premier League in the 2024/25 campaign, whilst Gakpo managed ten goals and four assists for Liverpool.

Cody Gakpo for Liverpool

That means that the £65m-rated star has scored six more goals and provided one more assist than the Netherlands international in the league since the start of last season, whilst playing for a midtable side instead of one that won the division last term.

There can sometimes be a concern that signing an attacker from a midtable side is a big risk because they go from playing on the counter to playing against low blocks, which is an entirely different attacking prospect.

However, as evidenced by the clip above, Semenyo has shown that he has the technical ability, strength, and finishing ability to score goals against packed defences, even whilst double-teamed by defenders, in the Premier League.

This suggests that the 25-year-old star could still thrive as a scorer and a creator of goals in the top-flight whilst playing for a team that is expected to be dominant on the ball, rather than playing on the counter-attack with a lot of space to run into on the break.

Liverpool secured another shaky win in the Premier League against bottom-of-the-table Wolves.

That is why Liverpool must keep pushing to persuade Semenyo to change his mind and make the move to Anfield, instead of signing for Manchester City, in the January transfer window.
